Got some time to reflect today.
I realized that becoming a “product designer” was an objective early in my career, but it was not necessarily my dream.
What I always considered myself to be is just a “designer.”
For more than two decades I’ve designed physical things, digital things, experiential things, and so forth.
I just wanted to create things that I envisioned in my head and make them come to life and see people interact with it.
“Product” is indeed something I design and something I love designing. But product is not all I design, and it’s not all I’ll ever design.
Real designers love the challenge of creation: the creation of carefully crafted materials, the creation of brands or associations in someone’s psyche, the creation of experiences and memories, the creation of desire itself.
I’m no different. I’m not any one type of designer. I’m just “designer.”
